EVEN THOUGH THE OFFICE they assigned to him was part of a small, windowless basement inside the Pentagon, Thomas Perry didn't mind. Judging from all the reports that were sent over for analysis, how his office looked really didn't matter, and he preferred to have no distractions of any kind, including a window to the outside.

The past twenty-four hours had been a whirlwind of activity for him. After getting his wife Abby settled down in a condominium unit not far from his work, Perry had to pore through an extensive amount of documentation as well and watched hours of videotaped interviews with the survivors of a possible extraterrestrial attack in California. What kept him going so far were adrenaline and caffeine, a potentially combustible combination at his age.

Mitchell Strunk walked into the office carrying a stack of folders before closing the door behind him. He had been assigned to bring the older man up to speed. "I've printed out the latest reports from FBI forensics. They're stumped with regards to the explosive debris and what caused it, so the military is sending in a number of engineers to do some more analysis."

Perry nodded as he kept his eyes on the laptop and glanced at the numerous papers strewn on his desk. They had managed to give him network access just a few hours before, and now he was busy getting up to speed. "There was one witness who stated that the unidentified beings were shooting at each other, are there any corroborating testimonies from the others?"

Mitchell shook his head as he wearily flopped down onto his chair. "Nope, just the one. Other witnesses said they were in too much of a panic to notice who was shooting at what."

"And no alien remains, other than human ones?"

"That's correct," Mitchell said softly. "One poor guy's entire upper body is gone, including his head. His arms were just lying there, on the front porch of his cabin."

"And forensics has no idea what kind of weapon it was that did it?"

"Not a clue."

Perry let out a deep breath. He had his work cut out for him. The Department of Defense was supposed to have all the answers when it came to dealing with any sort of emergency, and the last thing anyone wanted to hear was that they were stumped—but they were. We need to come up with something, because the president and the military are going to look towards us for a solution to this crisis, and we'd better get it right.

"According to the police report, they had two units from the sheriff's department that managed to get to the scene, thinking it was an active shooter incident," Mitchell said.

"Do we have any testimonies from them?"

"No, all four cops are dead. Two were killed on foot, and the other two were taken out when some sort of unknown weapon hit their vehicle, completely demolishing it. The military is airlifting what's left of the wreckage over to the Navy base at China Lake for analysis.
